Obituary for Rita Elizabeth DeLong
IN LOVING MEMORY
RITA ELIZABETH (GIBBS) DELONG
February 10, 2020
Rita Elizabeth (Gibbs) DeLong, 70, Mexico, NY; died Monday, February 10, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse, NY. She was born in Constableville, NY; daughter of the late Dayton and Gladys Alm Gibbs.
Rita was a 1969 graduate of Canton ATC receiving a AAS degree in Nursing. In June of 1972, she was initiated into the Victorian Chapter #205 OES and is now a member of the Lake City Victorian Chapter. She held many district offices, including Grand Rep of New Brunswick Associate Grand Warden; District Deputy Grand Matron, Commissioner of Appeals and currently Grand Rep. to North Dakota. She was awarded the Dewitt Clinton Masonic Award for Community Service. She was the “Cook” and catered many meals. She also knitted many articles for babies.
She loved to crochet and was always picking people up for meetings and helping in any way that she could. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mexico, and served as a Trustee. She was a Delegate to the annual conference and sung in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was an usher. She was also a coach and advisor for youth bowling. She was a member of the Mexico/Pulaski Women’s Bowling League. She was a Librarian at the Mexico Public Library. She also volunteered heavily with the Red Cross.
Rita is survived by, her husband of 50 years, Grant DeLong; four sons, Robert DeLong of Liverpool, NY, William DeLong of Oswego, NY, Franklyn DeLong of Oshkosh, WI and Andrew (Kelly) DeLong, of West Milford, NJ; a granddaughter, Quinn; her sister, Vinita Wilton, two brothers, Dayton Gibbs and Hilton Gibbs.
She was pre-deceased by her granddaughter, Kaetlan.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 from the First United Methodist Church, 4372 Church Street, Mexico, NY. Spring Interment will be in the South Richland Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Harter Funeral Home, Inc. 9 Washington Avenue, Mexico, NY.
