Steven Douglas Sterio, of Parish, New York; passed away at St. Luke’s Residential Health Care Facility in Oswego, NY on February 24, 2023, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born on April 7,1955 in Fulton, New York. Pre-deceased by his fathers, the late Alexander Sterio and Bernard Schmidt and his mother Clara Martineau Sterio. In addition to his late parents, he was also predeceased by his brother-in-law, Michael Jochumson.

Steve graduated from Altmar Parish Williamstown High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College where he played football and majored in Police Science. He served in the United States Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, Parris Island, NC, Camp Pendleton, CA, and Okinawa Japan. He was married to the former Colleen Anderson DeJohn.

Steve held many jobs including a deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff; and working on an oil rig in Oklahoma; and Nationwide Insurance Company.

Steve loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle and was truly a "biker dude". He was constantly polishing and tinkering with his bike. He attended many rallies, including Sturgis, SD. Steve was also a great storyteller who had a knack of convincing anyone who would listen that the story was the “Gospel truth”. He was a wanderer, free spirit, and an adventurer until he was disabled in a motorcycle accident. However, this didn't stop him from riding for several more years and sustaining 2 more motorcycle accidents until his tragic one in which he was permanently disabled. For over 30 years he was cared for by his loving mother, the late Clara Sterio. They shared a special bond and became mutual caretakers until her passing.

He is survived by his loving family of 5 sisters including Brenda Peters (Terry) Bonita Springs, FL; Candy Hughes (Bob) Volney, NY; Alexis Neuenfeldt (Bob) of Garden Grove, CA; Evinnia Lenick (Marty) of Owassa, OK; Deborah Jochumson (Mike) of Hillsborough, OR; and 2 brothers, Alexander Sterio (Julie Josh) and Gregory Sterio of Oswego, NY.

He also leaves behind 11 nieces and nephews, Rebecca Paras (Anthony); Emily Batchelder (Bryan); Anthony Peters (Jennifer); Jeffrey Hughes (Tracy); Matthew Hughes; Zachary Neuenfeldt; Codi Neuenfeldt; Lexi Sterio; Josh Sterio; Lisa Newton (Tom); Steven Jochumson; loving cousins and 16 great-nieces and nephews.

Services for Steve will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, County Route 45, Fulton, NY 13069 on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 11 a.m. Calling Hours and Visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Harter Funeral Home, Inc. 2983 West Main St. Parish, NY 13131. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials may be made donated to the Wounded Warriors organization.
