This is a sad time- end of an era. Some knew Bob as a dedicated plow driver... some as the best old-school logger they ever knew... some as a great party guy, family man, hard worker... most, some combination of all those things. He was ‘Chainsaw’, ‘Johnse’, or just Bob. But most will agree, those all added up to a real-life icon in the Mexico area. He and Flossie were dear friends of my parents; I still picture Bob, who always was in work clothes, showing up at my dad’s calling hours on a blue leisure suit. I never told him that I respected the effort it must have been to go that far out of his character to show his love and respect for dad. Yet there he was in that suit, and he helped to carry my dad to his final resting place.
As a kid Bob taught me how to properly fell a tree (and yes, ‘fell’ is the correct verb). That’s a skill I still have occasion to use, nearly 50 years after he taught me. Still, if a tree was too big, or too dangerous, or too close to something, Bob was the only one I would call. I will always remember him taking a step back, looking at a tree, looking up, and stomping confidently forward, huge old school chainsaw in hand, giving the cord one strong yank, and tearing in without hesitation... and dropping it exactly where he said... and turning around with a big grin.
Now Bob and Flossie are back together. And I’m sure, sharing some drinks and laughs with my parents, and all those gone before. These were people that didn’t ask for a thing but to be able to work hard, play hard, and enjoy life. That mindset is getting rarer every day.
RIP and God Speed Johnse. I hope you know the positive impression you made on so many lives. Including mine. It was a great life growing up with the Johnson family in it. Love to all the rest of you. From
