Obituary for Nellie Marie Roberts

In Loving Memory
Nellie Marie Roberts
June 19, 2022

Nellie Marie Roberts, 86, of Mexico, NY, passed away on June 19,2022 after a long illness.

Nellie was born on September 11, 1935 to Harry Benjamin and Mable Benjamin (Kellar) in Lorraine, NY. Nellie had fond memories of her family and growing up in Upstate NY; life with her father as a rural mail carrier; and her mother as a wonderful homemaker and baker (instilling in Nellie a love for baking as well), and her siblings.

While attending Adams Center High School, she met Wilton “Ray” Raymond Roberts. Nellie and Ray went on to have six children, Mitchell, Michael, Mark, Martin, Marcia, and Monica. They were married for 56 years until Ray’s death on July 4, 2010. Nellie was a devoted wife and mother to their six children and a loving and cherished grandmother and great-grandmother. It would not have been unusual for neighbors to see Nellie turning cartwheels on the lawn or snow-sledding down the field with her grandchildren. Nellie or “Mimi” as she was known to many of her grandchildren and others, loved spending time in her kitchen baking and preparing meals for her large family. She was well-known for her baking prowess and willingly shared her baked goods with family, friends at the Methodist Church and Key Bank of Mexico, and for cakewalk at the Mexico Firemen’s Field Days. Another passion and favorite pastime was being outside in her many gardens tending to her plants and flowers. Nellie’s life can be summed up by her devotion to family and always putting the desires and care of others first.

Nellie was predeceased by her husband Ray, siblings Robert, Frank, and Charles Benjamin, and Mary Tousley; granddaughter Stephanie Myers and grandson Justin Roberts. She is survived by her six children, Mitch in Lake Jackson, TX, Mike and Jolene in Myrtle Beach, SC, Mark and Gail in Unity, NH, and Marty and Lisa in Constantia, NY, Marcie and Rodney Law in Mexico, NY, and Monica and Mike Ariola of Mexico, NY. Nellie was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

There will be no services at Nellie’s request. A private family graveside service will be arranged at the family’s availability. Arrangements in care of Harter Funeral Home, Inc. Mexico, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the United Methodist Church of Mexico, a faith organization full of friends that Nellie felt at home with.
