Obituary for Mary E. Avery

Mary E. Avery, 96 of Pennellville N.Y. passed away December 3, 2022; at The Cottages at Garden Grove after an extended illness.

Mary was born in Key West FL to Jose Torano and Sarah (Averette) Torano on Sept. 20, 1926. It was in Key West during WW ll that she met her future husband of 50 years, Bernard Avery. They married on April 27, 1946, and then moved to Upstate NY shortly thereafter.

She was a communicant of St Agnes’ Church, followed by St. Stephens’, and was active in the Altar and Rosary Society. Mary was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Central Square since 1966. She worked at voting polls for many years and did bookkeeping work.

Mary was proud of the fact that both of her sons became Eagle Scouts. She loved music of all kinds and playing cards. Mary was a devoted caregiver to her husband for many years and drove them both to Florida for winter visits. Later, she became a snowbird, enjoying her winters in the Florida Keys with her brother John and friends.

Mary is survived by two daughter-in-laws, Debra (Donald) Avery and Elaine (David) Avery, three grandchildren, Dustin Avery, Danielle Avery Allen and Seth Avery; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by close family friend William Lonis, who was like a son to her in her later years. She was preceded in death by her husband Bernie, her sons Donald and David; and brothers Norman, Samuel and John Torano.

The family would like to thank Ray and Debbie Smith for their neighborly kindness.

On Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 family will be greeting friends between 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. at Harter Funeral Home, Inc. in Brewerton. A prayer service will be held at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay, NY.
