I consider it a privilege to have known Ken and been his colleague for most of my professional life.

He was a superb, dedicated teacher who generously shared the wisdom gathered from his life’s journey. He trod gently upon the earth; using its resources sparingly to create utility and beauty.

As a craftsman in wood, Ken had few peers. He knew every tree he ever saw, and could describe its bark, its leaves, and its properties.

June and I have cherished the friendship of Ken and Jane. We have enjoyed memorable times around their table, seeing pictures of their world travels, and sharing stories of our families and life experiences.

Ken’s life and work enriched thousands of lives. That is a considerable legacy.

Dear Jane,

We were deeply saddened to learn of Ken's passing, and we send our heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

We recall a number of visits with Ken, with most being in his garden or yard. He was a modest man, and was always especially interesting to visit with. I (J.D.) remember conversations about the Buick Reatta when he showed me that pristine car. We chatted about options for selling it when Ken decided he needed to do that. We also recall is hands-on commitment to the natural world, and to his always flourishing garden and lovely lawn and grounds.

In years earlier, including when he was on the Mexico School Board, Ken was a loyal friend and supporter to my mother, Bea Emerson. I know that she admired both Ken and you (her very close friend) greatly. Although we have not seen Ken in the last couple of years, we have kept in touch through my sister, Liz. So our family relationship with Ken was always a very positive and important one.

Jane, we grieve with you. God Bless!

Dear Mrs. Richards and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. You have been in our thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Richards was very kind to me on many, many occasions. What often comes to mind is your wonderful willingness to be so generous with your cabin and lovely property near Stratford. But I never think of that apart from my memories of Mr. Richards. He was really what made the Adirondacks stick in my mind. I learned so much from him and his kindness and patience with too many questions.

To this day wintergreen reminds me of his smile. I cannot think of Striped Maple or a Whip-poor-will without remembering Mr. Richards and his Pendleton shirts. Even seeing one nowadays (doesn’t happen often) reminds me of his quiet humility.

Over the decades I’d mentioned a few times how much his walks with me in the woods meant to me at that time. He would just smile and modestly deflect the compliment by asking how I was doing. I will miss him very much.

Ken was truly a pillar of many communities. I remember him from decades ago when I lived in central NY, and he left an impression with me with his wisdom, charity, and modesty. He was a friend of our family, and I appreciate the ongoing friendship he had with my parents. I wish his family peace and comfort.

Ken was a wonderful person who did a lot for the community. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, and the community. He carved four of the statues at Mexico Point Park.
