Obituary for Kenvyn Barrett Richards

In Loving Memory of Kenvyn B. Richards
August 26, 2019

Kenvyn Barrett Richards passed away August 26th. He was born in Orange, NJ. November 15, 1927 to Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. Richards. In 1932, the family moved to Stratford, NY, where he graduated in 1945 and enlisted in the Army, subsequently serving with the occupational troops in Germany.

He married Jane Ann Knapp on July 23, 1950, a marriage that would last for 69 years and produce five children. He attained his Bachelors Degree from Oswego State Teachers College in 1953 and was a charter member of the school’s first cross-country team. He taught Industrial Arts in Middleburgh, NY for 12 years during which he was also a scoutmaster, basketball and cross-country coach.

He completed his Masters Degree at Oswego in 1963 and the family moved to Maryland in 1965 where he pursued a Doctorate in Education at the University of Maryland. Receiving his degree in 1969, the family moved to New Haven, NY and he taught Industrial Arts at Oswego State University until retiring in 1984. During a sabbatical leave from Oswego State, he taught school for a year in Australia.

After retirement, Ken and Jane traveled extensively, to all 50 states, all Canadian provinces but one, and countries in six of the seven continents. In addition to his teaching career, Ken spent 20 years in adult leadership in scouting, 14 years on the Mexico Board of Education (including 8 as president), 25 years on the Mexico Dollars for Scholars Committee, and 10 years with the Cooperative Extension 4-H. He was also an accomplished woodworker and carpenter.

Ken was pre-deceased by a brother, Howard, and is survived by his wife and five children Amy (Timothy) Syrell, Douglas (Mary Ann), Patricia (Mark) Polott, Audrey Tripp, and David, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at 2:00 PM September 28 at the New Haven Congregational Church, New Haven, NY.
