Ella (Mowry) Hamer, born October 30, 1919, in Mexico, NY died peacefully on December 20, 2019. A life-long resident of Mexico, NY, Ella was the daughter of the late Charles and Rena H. Mowry. She graduated from Mexico Academy in 1936 and received her degree in teaching from Oswego University. In 1940 she took her first teaching job in Henderson, NY. She continued her dedication to educating children of all ages for 39 years and for several decades was the special education teacher for the greater Mexico School District. Ella’s love for life reflected in the home that she kept, welcoming everyone with a big smile, a warm embrace and an overflowing plate of food. She was an avid reader, mastered crossword puzzles in pen and dealt a serious hand of cards. Her special recipes and ability to make the best Manhattan are still coveted by many.

Married for 64 years, her husband, John D. Hamer (Dan), predeceased her in 2004. Surviving are her four children, Jon D. Hamer of Mexico, NY, Kathleen J. Howland (Michael) of Upperville, VA, Patrick M. Hamer (Michelle) of Central Square, NY and Roberta E. Hamer of Clifton, NJ, six grandchildren Keenan J.W. Jackson of North Hollywood, CA, Meghan H. Owen of Atlanta, GA, Erica Rochevot of Davidson, NC, Michael Boots of New York, NY, Traci & Billy Wallace of Mexico, NY and one sister, Helen M. Harris (James) of Debary, Fl. Four brothers predeceased her, Donald, Kenneth, Richard and William. Ella is also survived by many nieces and nephews and countless friends from near and afar.

Funeral Services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 at the Harter Funeral Home, Inc. 9 Washington Avenue, Mexico NY. Spring Interment will be in the Mexico Village Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to call from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mexico Volunteer Fire Department and the Donald McFee Memorial Ambulance Service, both located in Mexico, NY.
