Obituary for David C. Whitney

In Loving Memory
David C. Whitney
November 12, 1939 – May 1, 2024

David C. Whitney, 84, of Mexico, NY, affectionately known as Dave, Pop, Grandpop, and the Viking Chief, set sail on his final adventure surrounded by loved ones on May 1, 2024. David, a Mexico High School and Nichols College alumnus, epitomized courage and determination, navigating both the open sea and life's challenges. From captaining boats for nuclear power plant researchers to triumphing in canoe races and triathlons, his passion for
sailing and canoeing was central to his 84 years of life.

David's journey was shared with his beloved wife, Doni Whitney, lovingly known as "Tasty," with whom he enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Together, they traversed rivers and forged memories as they led the family on numerous outdoor adventures and sold canoes through their business, "Country Paddlers." His commitment to health and fitness, inspired by his idol Jack Lalanne, was matched only by his love for good looking women, protein shakes and, oddly, stale chocolate chip cookies.

A man of many hats, David has served in many roles from a food broker, sales manager, and bus driver to a belly dancing Sultan, a business owner, and a US Army soldier valiantly serving in a post-WWII Germany. His stories, mantras, and irrepressible sense of humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

In the annals of Camp Runamuck, where nicknames were earned, legends made, and children ran wild, the Viking Chief reigned supreme. His resilience in the face of adversity mirrored his final days, reminding us all to "Stay Vertical, Stay Pretty."

David was predeceased by his parents Richard and Helen Whitney, brother Gary Whitney, and son Scott Jason Whitney.

David is survived by his wife Doneita Marie Whitney, children Jennifer Bartosek (Larry Spencer), Jeff (Cindy) Whitney, Julia (Jim) Blunt, Donald (Tasha) Duell, and Jodi Whitney, grandchildren Makayla (Brandon) Chadwick, Hunter Whitney, Ethan and Jordan Bartosek, Emily Blunt (Jonah Amron), Evan and Ella Blunt, Casper, Jerrod, and Tristan Duell, Holland Whitney, great grandchildren Kimber and Kolter Chadwick, his sister Sherry (Flip) Folds,
several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

David leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and an unwavering spirit. Fair winds and following seas, Viking Chief. We invite you to celebrate David's remarkable life and share your stories with us at the Mexico VFW on Saturday, May 4th, from 12 – 3:30 pm EST.

In lieu of flowers, David’s wishes were to send donations to “the place on tv with all of the kids”, aka, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
