Obituary for Barbara Jean Syrell

Barbara Jean (Lewis/Vincent) Syrell passed away on December 17th in her home, where she lived most of her adult life, in Oswego, NY from cancer.

Barbara was born on December 9, 1939 in Mexico, NY to the late Marvin & Adeline Vincent. She attended Mexico Academy schools through 11th grade and graduated from Ogdensberg High School in Ogdensberg, NY. She played the trumpet in the MACS Band. She won the “Betty Crocker Cooking Award” in her senior year. She went on to graduate from the Ogdensburg Business School with a Steno Secretarial Certificate. Barbara held various secretarial positions and worked in the food industry throughout her lifetime. She is known by many family, friends, & neighbors for being a GREAT cook and baker!

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Marvin Frank (“Marvelous Marv”) & Adeline Elizabeth (Lewis) Vincent, husband John William Syrell, son Edward Elon Syrell, brothers Russell (Rusty) Vincent and Michael (Mike) Vincent, sister Joanne Marie Vincent, sister-in-laws Sandra Vincent and June Vincent, brother-in-law Charles Worlock, nephew David Tyrrell, and several aunts & uncles.

Barbara is survived by her children James Patrick Syrell, Dawn Marie Pratt (Gerald “Les”), Marsha Diane Sparks (Paul), daugher-in-law Victoria (Clarke/Green) Syrell, grandchildren Tammy Jean Cook and Isaac Edward Sparks, her great-grandchildren Amari Nicole Jones and Aryanah Carlene Jones. and siblings Sharon Jackson (Charles), Gerald (Jerry) Vincent, Deborah Worlock, Tena McCoy (Randy), John Vincent, Eugene Vincent (Christine) , Kandy Jendon (Ed), Joseph Vincent (Monica), and her uncle John Lewis (Marion). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, & cousins.

Funeral Services will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from Harter Funeral Home, Inc. 9 Washington Avenue, Mexico, NY, with Edward Grant officiating. There will be a private burial at the Mexico Cemetery at a later date. Relatives and Friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Mexico Food Pantry. Attention: Martha Sturtz, 5863 Scenic Ave, Mexico, NY 13114.
